Original paint vs repainted used excavators
Repaint is not automatically bad, and original paint is not automatically good. What matters is what the paint is hiding or showing.
Buyers often ask whether a used excavator is original paint. It is the wrong question on its own. A machine is repainted for two reasons: to look better for sale, or because it was genuinely repaired and prepared. Only the second is a problem to check.
What to look at instead:
- Repair marks. Look for welding, patch plates and fresh paint over cracks on the boom, arm and bucket, and around the boom foot.
- Wear that paint cannot hide. Pins, bushes, undercarriage and hydraulic cylinders wear with use; paint does not reset them.
- Consistency. A machine that is clean and tidy with honest wear usually means a straightforward history; a machine that is spotless with no visible wear is worth a closer look.
